An Integrated Model for the Treatment of People with Co Occurring Psychiatric and Substance Disorders (2 hours)

In this presentation, Dr. Kenneth Minkoff outlines the key principles of integrated treatment of mental illness and substance abuse. Dr. Minkoff is a nationally known expert on dual diagnosis and the integration of mental-health and substance-disorder services. He has authored and edited numerous works and is co-editor with Robert Drake, M.D. of Dual Diagnosis of Major Mental Illness and Substance Disorders.

Dr. Minkoff addresses the following key principles in his lecture.

• When mental illness and substance disorder coexist, both diagnoses should be considered primary, requiring simultaneous primary treatment for each.
• Addiction treatment requires modification when people also have psychiatric disabilities and disorders.
• The most significant predictor of success is an empathic, hopeful, continuous care relationship, in which integrated treatment and coordination of care can take place through multiple treatment episodes.
